Equal to plum pudding. This smoke is right on the cusp of my taste buds so sometimes I think it's mild and other times I think it has great taste. My wife, when I smoked it for the very first time, thought that there was a fire in the neighborhood. In any case, I was enjoying Nightcap and Old Ironsides and those were excellent blends that I didn't find fussy, so Penzance became a distant memory. I haven't given up on Penzance yet though and could come back later to update the foregoing if so moved. The tobacco world's own white whale, Esoterica tobaccos are manufactured by G.F. Germain. Penzance possesses a peaty undertone, a spicy-sour tinge from the Orientals, campfire smokiness from the Latakia, and the leather and mahogany notes of a fully matured Virginia. I ordered a 2 oz. Penzance possesses a tasty latakia earthiness and a creamy, satisfying smokiness without an overload of nicotine. Maybe the best only whish for more nicotine.this is a GREAT tobacco.not to miss.5 stars. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK VERY MUCH THE REVIEWER PIPESTUD CAUSE AFTER READING HIS REVIEWS, THE LAST TWO YEARS, I LEARNED A LOT, REGARDING THE TOBACCOS TASTING Even though, I?m a fan of Latakia, this tobacco forces you to revise many of your views. To start with there is Smoker's Haven Krumble Kake which is even harder to obtain than this as it has not been available for a few years. It is a great balance of latakia and Orientals with just enough Virginia for my taste little whiffs of sweetness that punctuate the pungent smoke and spice. I could alternate this with Escudo and never need anything else. I recently have added around 20 pipes to my collection, most of which were not pre-carbonized. Only recently has Penzance and Esoterica had traffic jams and hiccups in production and distribution. If youve ever been inside of an old tack room in a stable, you know what I mean. I say that the room note is "Tolerable to Strong" based on what others (non-pipe-smokers) have said but, personally, I loved the smell when others have smoked it in my presence. I looked in my briar and all I saw was a fine ash. I can't get enough of this great tobacco. Nice with a rich coffee. Yes, in the old days, when he used to run rum out of Mexico and I was on the other side. Im changing my review. I find it a bit one dimentional, and wouldnt smoke it more than occasionaly. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on it. Produced a nice ashvery good, but definitely not for everyone. Its steeped in fig and plum with an indescribable topping. In its case the hype is justified. This a rewarding smoke that brings up images of a foggy morining in London. So I loaded it up in a pipe and tried it and it was marvelous definitely one of the best Packers Ive ever had. One day a couple of months ago I picked up a tin of Penzance on a whim. Even though I love to play with crumble cake, I'm usually to busy working to worry about the tobacco density in my bowl- enjoy, When I first tried this a few months ago I thought it was OK. Nothing else like it.. Ah Penzance. Finish: Finishes more heavily without being overwhelming. It is PERFECT after a good meal and good wine or whisky.I cannot smoke it all day. Also as I believe, all the Latakia tobaccos leave intense marks on the bowl. I hadn't touched Penzance until now. It's the most sublime smoke to ever enter my mouth. The best tobacco I have ever smoked, wish it wasnt so hard to get !!! If you like Balkan blends this is it. What is assumed to be sugar bloom can be found on older examples. This is one of my staples, cant think of any I could say that hasn't already been done better than I could. The taste to me is flat. My guess is tomorrow most of it will be on eBay at 40-80$ an oz. The pouch aroma is almost musty/earthy, and the room note, although strong, does not seem to be penetrating. What is there to say, simply an amazing smoke and a must try for every pipe smoker out there. Penzance packs and lights easily, and unleashes a lovely smooth English taste. Esoterica- Ramsgate 8 ounce. Strenght is mild to medium. This Penzance is a very fine old school no nonsense smoke but I think Revor just pips it to the post.I am aware tobacco tasting is a purely subjective thing so other reviewers will no doubt have their own take on this tobacco but for me it is almost exactly like good old Revor plug with a slightly oriental aspect.Good stuff though! Opening a tin will cause your dog to howl, your wife to leave you, and in the end it might likely kill you. Would not turn away a gift of this stuff. There is lots of smoke, and I always feel satisfied, like all is well with the world, and money well spent. Amazing . I smoke this in a Dunhill group 4 pot shape and it does justice to this fine blend. Orlik Pipe Tobacco Esoterica Dorchester . Im simply casting my vote for this wonderful blend. Out of Stock. Most of the time, I do not enjoy heavy latakia tobaccos, but Penzance is the exception. Tin note is Oriental forward, woody spicy with Latakia bringing up the rear but present in the nose. I am thinking that I may have waited too long to try an English blend such that a total appreciation of same was not my lot. Something's missing for the top grade. I cant remember what town I bought the Coors and Olympia from but it was a small Mom and Pop store. The aroma from the pouch is very rich and smoky, and I find it very pleasant. This brand has been reviewed to death here, so I am going to keep this short. It is full of flavor and yet unbelieveably mellow and smooth, with no harshness, bitterness or cloying sweetness whatsoever. Rich and velvety. I guess it's popular. To be more specific regarding the iodine smell. Rich, slightly sweet. I like my campfire latakia and Penzance isn't a big campfire bomb, but has enough to keep that toasty woodsy flavor. It's best smoked apart from lighter blends. I did not see anything that looked like mold on Quiet Nights. I lack some of the vocabulary necessary to properly describe it, not because I'm that enamored with this tobacco (which I am) but because I simply am unable to make the words happenit tastes earthy compared to some other similar blends that I have tried. Not for everyday use, but if you're sitting on your own in the evening in your living room or porch without having to do anything, Penzance is your best friend. This is still one of my favorite tobacs. A note regarding aging: I've never had one of these little square tins fail, but I have found rust in them after a few years. I've either traded or sold all of my Penzance, and will not be acquiring any more. Highly recommended. That would give you quite an impression, huh? Penzance requires little if any rubbing out. But if you are looking for the smoothest English blend around, buy a tin of Penzance. IMHO, Penzance is very much overrated. Will I pay a premium for it again? A Latakia blend you owe to yourself to try. I cant believe people actually PAY for this stuff!! I wonder if tobacco would ever have been smoked if it didnt induce these effects, then or now.
